a girl in a book
Spring 2023
If I were a girl in a book this would all be so easy.
Jo March
Books have always captivated me. There’s something magical about being able to dive into the text and lose yourself in a fictional world, to forget reality for a moment, to dream. There’s something so familiar about falling for characters you love, and something so comforting about seeing yourself in them. Growing up is scary. Emotions are scary. It’s hard to be vulnerable. It’s often isolating to feel such strong emotions, thinking that no one else has ever felt that way. To see these feelings and experiences reflected in fictional characters makes us feel like we’re not so alone.
Little Women by Louisa May Alcott is my favorite book of all time. There’s something so beautiful about the simplicities and complexities of girlhood, of ambition and loss and love. The 2019 film adaptation directed by Greta Gerwig changed my life in ways I can’t articulate. The story became even more special to me when I became the photographer for a theatre company called Literary Concerts when I saw the casting call for a production of Little Women (taylor’s version), an adaptation of the book featuring all Taylor Swift music. Working with Literary Concerts has presented me with incredible opportunities as a photographer, reignited my passion for stage photography, and introduced me to my closest friends.
In creating this project, I knew I wanted to develop a sort of character portrait for each of the four March sisters from the story, Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy. They each have such distinct qualities and goals, and I think everyone can relate to at least one of them very closely. These images are both reflections of the sisters as well as examples of how readers can see themselves in these characters. I carefully crafted and developed color schemes, setups, and costumes for each of the four sisters in order to express the aesthetics and qualities I most closely associate with them.
